Meet Alfie and Emily, Renewable Energy Engineers

What does it really mean to be an Engineer? Is there one type of Engineer? And what do they do all day? Meet Alfie and Emily who would like to tell you about their jobs in Renewable Energy Engineering and how they became an engineer.

Meet Alfie

About:  Alfie grew up in Ireland and now lives in Cornwall.  He works for the Simply Blue Group (a company that run ocean-based projects) as a Senior Project Development Engineer.

Alfie is passionate about the ocean, green energy and loves to surf when he gets the chance!

Route into Engineering:  Alfie went to university and gained a Bachelors degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and then a Masters degree in Science focused on Engineering in Sustainable Energy.

Why Engineering?  Alfie wasn’t sure what he wanted to do when he was school but chose engineering because he liked the technical side of how things are made.

He chose to study renewable energy because he wanted to make a difference to climate change and the environment.  He likes that his job allows him to solve problems caused by pollution and make the planet healthier.

Then meet Emily

About:  Emily is a Project Developer with the Simply Blue Group, who work in Marine (ocean based) projects that help to tackle climate change, reduce the impact of pollution and produce green energy.

She’s currently working on projects that use wind turbines in the sea to make energy.

Route into Engineering:  Emily always liked Maths and Science at school.  She went to university and gained a Bachelors degree in Physics and then Masters in Science with a focus on sustainable energy engineering (both with top grades).

Why Engineering?  Emily works in offshore wind technology because she feels she can make a real change in the impact of pollution and climate change on our planet.

As a keen surfer and wild swimmer this is really important to her. Engineering allows her to follow scientific ideas, her love of the ocean and be creative.
